Hoy, miércoles 31 de octubre, es la noche anterior al día de todos los santos y en Cataluña como en otros lugares de España y del mundo, existen diferentes formas de celebrar este día tan especial.

La Castanyada es una fecha popular de Cataluña que se celebra el día de todos los santos. Como el Halloween de los países anglosajones, proviene de un antiguo ritual funerario. La fiesta consiste en comer castañas, panellets, boniatos y fruta confitada. La bebida típica de la Castanyada es el moscatel.

Se suele representar con la figura de una Castanyera: una mujer vieja, vestida con ropa pobre de abrigo y con pañuelo a la cabeza, delante de un torrador de castañas para la venta a la calle.

Fuera de Cataluña hay diversas formas de celebrar La Castanyada:
En Cádiz se celebra el 31 de octubre los Tosantos, disfrazando a los conejos, cochinillos y gallinas de los mercados de la ciudad
En Galicia se celebra el Magosto.
En Cocentaina (Alicante) se celebra la “fira de tots sants” o feria de todos los santos.
En México, donde se conjuga con el 2 de noviembre, se hacen ofrendas para agasajar a los fallecidos y celebrar esos dos días.
En Guatemala se realizan visitas a los cementerios.

Today, Wednesday, October 31st, is Halloween. Catalonia, as well as other places in the world, celebrates this special day in various ways.

Castanyada is a popular date in Catalonia that celebrates All Saints’ Day. Like Halloween, it comes from an old funeral ritual. The party consists of eating chestnuts, panellets, sweet potatoes and candied fruit. Also, a typical beverage of this holiday is called muscatel.

The holiday is best represented by the figure of a castanyera: an old woman, dressed in poor winter clothes and wearing a handkerchief on her head, in front of a torrador of chestnuts for sale in the street.

Outside of Catalonia there are different ways to celebrate La Castanyada:
In Cadiz (Andalucía), the Tosantos is celebrated on October 31st, dressing up rabbits, pigs and hens in the markets of the city.
In Galicia (North Spain), the Magosto is celebrated.
In Cocentaina (Alicante), a “fira de tots sants” is held.
In Mexico, November 2nd is celebrated as well and gifts are exchanged.
In Guatemala, people go visit their decreased loved ones at the cemetery.
